Every year some British dictionaries announce their ‘Word of the year’. These are usually words that have been widely used in the year, or new and popular words that have entered the language.
This year Collins Dictionary has announced that ‘lockdown’ is their word of the year. Everybody is talking about the current pandemic, and ‘lockdown’ is a big part of that.
According to Collins, ‘lockdown’ is:
“the imposition of stringent restrictions on travel, social interaction, and access to public spaces”
